Teething Baby & Baby Teeth Symptoms

Teething Baby & Baby Teeth Symptoms, Amherstburg Dental Office

When your baby is teething, he or she will often be irritable throughout the day as well as fussy during the night. The first stage of teething is called primary teeth which occurs when your babies teeth breaks through the gums.

Generally, teething can begin when your child is 6 months old however teething can occur even earlier. Some babies start teething as early as 3 months and some begin as late as 12 months.

When your child reaches 3 years old, your baby will already have all 20 primary teeth.

When the babies teeth start breaking through, you will notice the lower front teeth growing in first. The upper front teeth tend to grow in within 1 to 2 months later.

Symptoms of Teething Baby

When your baby is teething, you may notice that he or she is fussier then usual. This may be a result due to soreness or swelling under the gums before the eruption of a tooth. You may notice these symptoms 3-5 days prior to seeing a tooth in your babies mouth. The teething symptoms may settle as soon as the tooth breaks through the gum line.

Many babies will look for comfort, or some method of relief due to the pressure in their gums by biting on their fingers or even toys. You may also notice they refuse to eat and drink. This is due to the pain in their mouths as a result of teething.

You may notice your baby is drooling more than usual, this is another symptom of teething.

How to comfort your teething baby

  • Use a teething ring, a cold wet cloth or a clean finger to gently rub your baby’s gum for a few minutes at a time
  • Offer your child teething toys which can help them find some relief
